Sports: Rudy Guiliani=Hypocrite

October 25, 2007

So, as a Chicago baseball fan, I have two allegiances: The White Sox and whoever plays the Cubs. As a true diehard White Sox fan, I could and would never support the team that resides on the north side. Usually, that’s how it is for true fans of their sports teams: they would never cheer for the enemy. Enter Rudy Guiliani. A lasting image I will have of him is from the 2001 World Series, wearing his Yankee cap, cheering for his beloved Yankees in Yankee stadium. Lately, he’s even berated Hillary Clinton for supporting the Yankees, basically saying her motives weren’t pure, seeing as she’s from Chicago, and an admitted Cubs fan. As a true Yankees fan, you would think the answer would be obvious as to whom he would be supporting in the World Series between the plucky, never-say-die Colorado Rockies, or the hated Boston Red Sox. Well, guess what?

“I’m rooting for the Red Sox,” the Republican presidential contender said in response to a question, sparking applause at the Boston restaurant where he was picking up a local endorsement.

“I’m an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets,” he said. “Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn’t because I’m loyal to New York.”

A true Yankees fan, no matter their so-called allegiance to the American League, would ever cast their lot with the Red Sox, their most bitter rivals.  There is something to consider: He spoke these words while campaigning in New Hampshire, the site of the first Republican primary, and serious Red Sox territory.

Hello world!
